Get Involved!

IRG Bi-Weekly Meetings

The best place for students and postdocs to get involved with MEM-C research is by attending the regular in-person IRG meetings. IRG-1 meets bi-weekly on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month. IRG-2 meets on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month. Meetings include student presentations and research discussions. For more information about the IRG-1 meetings, contact IRG-1 Lead Kai-Mei Fu (kaimeifu@uw.edu) and for more information about the IRG-2 meetings contact IRG-2 co-lead Alexandra Velian (avelian@uw.edu).

SharePoint, Listserv & Slack

MEM-C connects in a variety of virtual ways. Members can gain access to the Center’s SharePoint (which operates as an intranet), join the MEM-C listserv for regular email announcements, or join the MEM-C Slack workspace. Contact MEM-C’s grant manager, Kelly Olenyik (olen@uw.edu), to join these platforms.

Active MEM-C Membership

Since MEM-C is about “more than research”, being an “active MEM-C member” means doing more with MEM-C than “just” research. Here’s the list of ways MEM-C leadership thinks about what it means to be “active” in MEM-C:

  • Mentor a MEM-C REU/RET participant
  • Serve as an MSF superuser or deputy superuser
  • Volunteer for at least 3 MEM-C outreach events in the past 12 months
  • Assist with developing new outreach activities and/or creating supporting documentation for outreach activities
  • Coordinate IRG meetings
  • Serve on the MEM-C Education Committee
  • Lead REU/RET journal clubs and/or seminars
  • Instruct at NanoCamp
  • Create content for MEM-C website & social media
  • Pitch your own idea for Center involvement to MEM-C leadership!

Want more info? Contact Andrea Carroll (ageddes@uw.edu) if you are interested in or have questions about helping with REU/RET programs, NanoCamp, outreach activities, and/or monthly lunches. Contact Kelly Olenyik (olen@uw.edu) if you are interested in or have questions about meeting coordination or website work. Contact Paul Nguyen (pvnbunny@uw.edu) if you’d like to serve as a shared facility superuser.

    Travel Stipends

MEM-C travel stipends are available to students and postdocs to support travel related to MEM-C research.

    Criteria:

    • Only people “active” in MEM-C are eligible (see above)
    • Stipends cover a max of 50% of travel costs up to $1,000
    • Travel costs can include airfare, ground transportation, luggage, per diem, registration, and lodging
    • Each person is limited to 2 travel stipends in a given 12-month period
    • Availability of stipends may be impacted by availability of funds
    • Travel must adhere to all UW Travel Policies and the policies of the departments involved
    • Travel must be pre-approved by MEM-C and the PI

How to request MEM-C travel stipend:

    • Discuss with your PI that you’d like to request MEM-C travel funds
    • Email MEM-C’s grant manager (olen@uw.edu) and copy your PI with the request. In the email note:
      • How the travel is related to MEM-C, and,
      • How you qualify as “active” in MEM-C (see above)
    • Your request will be reviewed by the chairs of the MEM-C Education Committee
    • You’ll receive an email with instructions if you’re eligible. If you aren’t eligible, MEM-C leadership will suggest ways for you to get more involved to make the travel funds available to you in the future.
